How does Naturopathic Medicine compare to conventional medicine?
Both conventional Medical Doctors (MDs) and Naturopathic Doctors (NDs) provide health care and both receive a science based training for their profession. The main differences between naturopathic and conventional medicine are the philosophical approach and the therapies used. Naturopathic doctors treat patients as individuals by addressing the physical, environmental, lifestyle, attitudinal, and emotional aspects of health. This allows Naturopathic Doctors to find and treat the root cause of the disease using natural, non-invasive therapies and therefore restoring health for the long term. Conventional allopathic doctors generally address and treat the symptoms of disease and use pharmaceutical therapies or surgery.
At Thornhill Naturopathic Health Clinic we treat all kinds of people, from infants and children to seniors, with a variety of health concerns, from colds and flu to chronic illness and from the physical to the psychological. We also have a focus on providing adjunctive care to cancer patients and on providing treatment to alleviate the impact of cancer treatments on the body.
Naturopathic medicine is beneficial for the following types of patients:

Education, training and accreditation:
Naturopathic Doctors are required to complete an undergraduate University degree, before entering into a four year full time Naturopathic program at an accredited school of naturopathic medicine. Training includes basic, medical and clinical science; diagnostics; naturopathic principles and therapeutics; and extensive clinical internship experience under the supervision of registered naturopathic doctors. Graduates receive the title N.D. or Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine. Following the completion of an accredited program, NDs must successfully complete standardized Entry to Practice Naturopathic Examinations in order to qualify for registration. In Ontario, Naturopathic Doctors are registered by College of Naturopaths of Ontario. Acupuncturists are registered by the the College of Traditonal Chinese Medicine Practioners and Acupuncturists of Ontario.

The hydrotherapy bath also releases very fine bubbles. This has a soothing tranquil effect on your body which helps relieve your stress and tension.
Circulation - Our hydrotherapy bath helps to improve circulation. Your blood flow takes oxygen and nourishment to all your cells and tissues. When working correctly, this forms the basis of a healthy life. Good circulation also brings the benefit of good lymph drainage, which helps to clear the body of toxins.

Your immune system is your internal police force and when working efficiently, helps you overcome minor infections ranging from the common cold right up to acute and chronic diseases.
Stress - Hydrotherapy can provide you with the vital key to breaking the stress cycle of everyday modern life. In today's busy world, you can be prone to stress related illnesses, which can cause a wide range of physical and psychological problems. For example, high blood pressure, headaches, digestive complaints, insomnia, depression and anxiety attacks. Unfortunately stress not only affects the mind but more importantly your immune system.
Complexion - The hydrotherapy bath may help to regulate your body's temperature control by improving the efficiency of your perspiration glands. This releases the toxins from your body and leaves you with a healthy glowing complexion. The oxygen flow is increased by the effect of the millions of bubbles and this activity can also help reduce fluid retention and even have an effect on other ailments such as cellulite. In short, Hydrotherapy can offer an excellent way for you to regain and maintain a healthy and painless body.
What happens to you during Hydrotherapy?
When you are in pain or under stress, chemical changes in your body can cause the blood pressure and pulse rate to increase. Having regular hydrotherapy treatments may help you to reduce these symptoms by relieving swollen joints and slowing down the process of stress reaction. This will help you to relax and unwind, which makes it easier for you to deal with your pain.

Massage Therapy: Massage is one of the oldest, simplest forms of therapy and is a system of stroking, pressing and kneading different areas of the body to relieve pain, relax, stimulate, and tone the body. Tension Relief Massage Therapy, also known as Swedish massage, is the most common form of massage.
Massage does much more than create a pleasant sensation on the skin. It also works on the soft tissues (the muscles, tendons, and ligaments) to improve muscle tone. Although it largely affects those muscles just under the skin, its benefits may also reach the deeper layers of muscle and possibly even the organs themselves. Massage also stimulates blood circulation and assists the lymphatic system (which runs parallel to the circulatory system), improving the elimination of waste throughout the body.
Therapeutic massage can be an important part of your health maintenance plan, by:
• Reducing or eliminating pain
• Improving joint mobility
• Improving circulation
• Improving the functionality of the immune system
• Increasing lymphatic drainage
• Reducing depression and anxiety
• Reducing tension within muscles
• Relieving stress
Massage therapy improves circulation by bringing oxygen and other nutrients to body tissues. It relieves muscle tension and pain, increases flexibility and mobility, and helps clear lactic acid and other waste, which reduces pain and stiffness in muscles and joints. Massage therapy relieves stress by lowering levels of hormones such as cortisol and also appears to enhance immune function.
Reiki: With its origins in Japan, Reiki is an energy medicine technique that promotes healing. Energy is transferred by lightly placing hands on various parts of the body, allowing for self-healing and a state of equilibrium. A Reiki treatment feels like a wonderful glowing radiance that flows through and around you.
Reiki treats the whole person, body, emotions, mind and spirit. It creates many beneficial effects that include relaxation and feelings of peace, security and wellbeing. Reiki develops a spiritual balance, which is the road to wisdom and peace. Simple, natural and safe, Reiki enables spiritual healing and self-improvement that everyone can use. It has been known to help those with illnesses and maladies, and works well in conjunction with other medical or therapeutic techniques to relieve side effects and promote recovery.
